From Our Founder

Thank you all for coming to help Hazel and I celebrate our sixth child “The General”.  I will try to give a short version of how General Mill Supplies came about.

I’ll back pedal to the year 1930, the year I graduated from Warren Easton High School.  I won a stenographic position at a very large rice mill, a job paying $40.00 a month.  Things went along okay until the depression caused the bank crash of 1933. Some of the finest and strongest firms in business at that time folded.  The firm I worked for was quite strong, but because I was young and single, I was given two weeks-notice and “laid off”.

This turned out to be one of the very best breaks I got in the business.  I was able to be a little independent.   My services were being “BID” for by my new employer and the Rice Mill.  One worked against the other, and I began with my new employer at $75.00 a month.  Many have asked me what caused me to take a gamble on starting a brand new business in June 1945 and when things were still in an unsettled, shabby condition from World War II.

It was a big risk, but my dear Hazel agreed to take the gamble with me.  That was all the encouragement I needed.  It was really rough going for a while, but we overcame the adversities and opened up with our staff of 3.  The market was very competitive, and men who started in business at that time did not make it. General Mill Supplies lucked out and eventually survived.

Things began to get better and General Mill Supplies continued to grow, resulting in our being among the three top businesses in this field in this state. We are most fortunate in having many wonderful employees and customers.
